Hence it can be concluded that PVC-coating is a rather tough form of protection, the effectiveness of which is substantially preserved even when the reinforcement is handled in a rough way. With properly selected PVC-coatings, the risk of local spalling is indeed low. All the same, any steel surface that might be exposed should always 41 COATING PROTECTION FOR REINFORCEMENT be patched with the appropriate patching material made available by the manufacturer of the coated reinforcement. Areas where the coating has been subjected to bruising, surface abrasion or local deformations, should not constitute reasons for complaints against the supplier, as long as the steel surface has not been laid bare.

This radical difference is partly due to an obvious difference in climate and social pressure to maintain an open roads policy which has led to salt consumption in USA on a much greater scale than in the UK.
