Rodney was in poor repair and could only make 22 knots, while the decks were packed with crates for use during a planned refit in Boston. Fortunately Bismarck was d a m a g e d during an attack by Swordfish torpedo-bombers, and Rodney was able to overhaul her opponent on 27 May. By that stage Rodney had been joined by other warships of the Home Fleet, including HMS King George V, c o m m a n d e d by Admiral Sir J o h n Tovey.
