Air enters through the nostrils into a large chamber called the nasal cavity. This cavity is divided in half by the nasal septum, a thin wall made of bone and a tough tissue called cartilage. Three flat, spongy plates called the nasal conchae, or turbinates, stick out into the cavity. They act like radiators and help to warm cold air. The bones that surround the nasal cavity Page 23 The main areas of the nasal cavity contain hollow spaces called sinuses. They help to make the bones in your head lighter.

The trachea divides into two narrower tubes called bronchi, which are also reinforced by cartilage rings. One bronchus passes into the right lung, and the other passes into the left lung. Inside the lungs, the bronchi branch again and again into smaller and smaller tubes. The smallest, the bronchioles, are only about 1/25 inch (1 millimeter) in diameter. Their thin walls have no cartilage support and are rather elastic; strands of muscles can contract to narrow their openings and cut down the flow of air.

The Roman physician Galen firmly established the idea that pneuma (from the Greek word for "breath") was a spirit that came from the air and brought life to all living things. People continued to believe that air was a spirit for nearly 1,500 years! It wasn't until 1643 that a young Italian scientist, Evangelista Torricelli, proved that air had weight and took up space. Scientists began to make many more discoveries about how the body works and the way air gives us life. In seventeenth-century England, Robert Hooke found that parts of the body act as pumps, and John Mayow showed that the substance in air that animals need is the same substance that makes a fire burn.
