13 In studies such as these, then, Latin Americanists are doing important work to contest the notion that, as Steve Clark puts it, ‘travel writing is inevitably one-way traffic’ as well as to complicate the idea that the travel encounter is always about ‘simple relations of domination and subordination’ (Clark, 1999: 3). These works also attest to what is at stake in the encounter between postcolonial and Latin American studies more generally which, as Loomba et al. : 6). I want to conclude this chapter, therefore, with one representative case study of such work which testifies to this shift and to the formulation, within an interdisciplinary framework, of an attenuated if still abbreviated vocabulary for the analysis of the region’s contemporary travel narratives.
Meanwhile, the Dutchman Gordon’s accounts of his later journey to the country (1773–1775) attest to a refusal to submit to the ‘dehumanising natural-historical discourse’ (Huigen: 74) by which Pratt characterizes the period, primarily because of his interest in indigenous cultures (‘the landscape is anything but depopulated’, Huigen: 73), the greater influence of the empiricist George Louis Leclerc de Buffon, as well as his own criticism of existing understandings of the region. ‘There seems little reason to insist on a Linnaean watershed in the middle of the eighteenth century,’ Huigen concludes: indeed, ‘in neither case does the presence or absence of taxonomic intention preclude the sympathy of the authors with the indigenous population’ (76).
It is not a book of opinion. It’s a book of stories’ (Naipaul, 1999: xii). I argue that the underlying assumptions of this 38 Postcolonial Travel Writing claim, as well as the stylistic choices that Naipaul makes to create the impression of objectivity, re-inscribe the relationship between global power travel narratives that Pratt identifies in colonial literature. In this respect, Beyond Belief is a book that seems to confirm the widely held view amongst postcolonial theorists that Naipaul’s travel narratives reinforce an understanding of ‘the West’ as the ‘universal civilization’.
