Dorothy Andersen moved with her mother to Saint Johnsbury, Vermont, where she nursed her mother while attending school. Andersen graduated from high school in 1918 and entered Mount Holyoke College. After her mother died in 1920, she completed her undergraduate degree without the financial or emotional support of any relatives. In 1922, Andersen began medical school at Johns Hopkins University, where she worked in the laboratory of Dr. florence sabin, the first woman to enroll, graduate, and teach at Johns Hopkins.
